About the community
A group of 40 professional craftswomen and men work to
create hand-made products made of Tucumă straws, a
native palm of the Amazon. This palm has a great
capacity for regeneration. It takes only 30 days for a
new leaf to start growing after one has been pulled out.
This allows a sustainable production. The process has
been certificated by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).
The palm is dyed using local plants and fruits. Urucureá
has a school for primary and secondary level students,
which serves not only the local students but also the
neighboring communities. A micro system for water
distribution reaching the houses is in place but there
is currently no health centre, just a community health
agent – the sick must be taken to Santarém.
The only means of communication in the community is a
public phone and a radio from the project Saude e
Alegria. The radio is very important to Urucureá as it
is for most communities in the Amazon.
